In response to my enquiry whether he had evolved an

alternative for the second half of recognition formula hạ said that owing to numerous functions now taking place he

had been unable to consult the other members of his government, but later on he produced a suggested wording which he emphasized was to be taken as a purely personal effort of his own.

British Government are prepared to recognise Nationalist government of China in respect of territory latter now control, and which they may further control. But it is understood that this recognition of Nationalist covernment shall not serve as a precedent as long as existing status quo is not altered in sense of emergence of conditions calculated to postpone indefinitely the establishment of a Central goverment of the whole of China.
